Penzance Fashion Hub – How the Project Began

Penzance Fashion Hub – How the Project Began

The idea for Penzance Fashion Hub grew out of conversations with local people.

Following the November 2025 by-election in Penzance Promenade Ward, where I received 216 votes, I took time to reflect on the many conversations I had with residents and businesses while canvassing. One comment came up repeatedly:

"What is Penzance actually known for?"

That question stayed with me.

Since 2018, I have regularly walked the streets of Penzance, observing how the town has evolved. One trend became impossible to ignore—the remarkable growth of independent fashion retailers, particularly vintage and pre-loved clothing.

I decided to carry out a simple audit.

The findings surprised even me. Penzance has more than 56 clothing and accessory retailers, including 19 independent shops specialising in vintage and pre-loved fashion. This makes Penzance one of Cornwall's strongest destinations for independent fashion retail, with an exceptional concentration of unique businesses.

Rather than keeping this information to myself, I wanted to share it with the community in a simple and accessible way.

Phase One – The A6 Postcard

In January 2026, I designed and produced an A6 postcard featuring fashion imagery alongside a street map showing the locations of all 56 clothing and accessory shops.

The aim was simple: present the information in a format that people could understand instantly. Instead of lengthy reports or statistics, the postcard visually demonstrated the strength of Penzance's independent retail sector.

The project was also about creating an identity that included every clothing and accessory retailer—from national brands to independent boutiques—with particular emphasis on Penzance's growing reputation for vintage and pre-loved fashion.

The postcards were distributed throughout Penzance and also reached Hayle, Helston, St Ives, St Austell, Grampound and Truro. They were widely shared on Facebook and generated encouraging feedback.

The response exceeded expectations.

People praised the photography, colour scheme and design. Many visitors began using the postcard as a practical shopping map around the town. The only consistent criticism was that the map itself was too small.

Phase Two – The Information Leaflet

That feedback led directly to the second phase of the project.

In March 2026, the postcard evolved into a folded A4 leaflet featuring a much larger, easier-to-read map.

This time, local businesses were invited to become partners by helping to fund the print run. By sharing the production costs, each participating business contributed just £22.50 towards printing 5,000 leaflets.

I would like to sincerely thank the businesses that supported this community initiative:

  • Dead Sailors
  • Selo Turkish Barbers
  • Noir Taj
  • We Have What You Need
  • Ramis
  • Angel Art Tattoo
  • Causeway Express
  • Newlyn Cheese
  • The Quirky Birds
  • USA Chicken
  • Endless Spiral
  • Le Raj
  • Fishboy PZ
  • Istanbul Turkish Barber
  • Little India
  • Marigold Moth
  • Ministry of Flavour
  • MAPublisher
  • Easy Print
  • Flashback Fashion

The leaflet explained the vision behind the Penzance Fashion Hub and demonstrated the scale of the town's independent fashion offer.

The concept has also been discussed with individuals connected to both the BID and Penzance Town Council. Formal discussions and further development remain ongoing.

Building the Brand

As the project developed, larger A5 promotional cards were produced for display in shop windows and inside businesses.

These have helped strengthen recognition of the Penzance Fashion Hub identity throughout the town, with many retailers proudly displaying them.

A3 promotional posters have since been produced and supplied to retailers, further reinforcing the campaign.

Taking the Message Across Cornwall

The next stage is to promote Penzance well beyond the town itself.

To achieve this, we have partnered with  to distribute at least 10,000 leaflets to carefully selected visitor locations across Cornwall.

Target areas include:

  • Land's End
  • St Ives
  • Newquay
  • Padstow
  • Falmouth
  • St Austell
  • Truro

The leaflets will be placed in up to 100 retail and visitor outlets chosen by the distributor to maximise exposure to tourists and shoppers.

Advertising opportunities are available within the leaflet, including positions around the town map, on the front cover and on the back page.

So, starting from £39.99 you will get 10,000 leaflets, distributed to the targeted locations and up to 100 retail & holiday outlets throughout Cornwall (as seen fit by the distributors).

Looking Ahead

The long-term aim of the Penzance Fashion Hub is straightforward:

To establish Penzance as Cornwall's destination for independent fashion, vintage and pre-loved shopping.

This is not simply about promoting clothing shops. By encouraging more people to visit Penzance throughout the year, increased footfall has the potential to benefit cafés, restaurants, galleries, markets, attractions and the wider business community.

As part of this continuing campaign, we are also producing a 12-page promotional magazine ("zine"), showcasing the wider business district and highlighting everything that makes Penzance worth visiting.

This project complements the work already being undertaken by local businesses, the BID and other organisations committed to the town's economic regeneration.
